Atholl Brose

The Atholl Brose is a shaken whiskey cocktail from UK and Ireland, creamy. It is made with blended scotch, oat water (brose), honey syrup and more, served in a wine glass.

A Scottish drink said to go back to 1475, when the Earl of Atholl used it to catch a rebel by spiking the well he drank from.

Ingredients

Blended Scotch50 ml (1¾ oz)
Oat water (brose)30 ml (1 oz)
Honey syrup15 ml (½ oz)
Fresh cream30 ml (1 oz)

Measures for one serve. Open the drink in Bar Bible to scale it to a batch or switch to ounces.

Method

  1. Soak oats in water overnight, then strain and squeeze to make the brose.
  2. Shake the whisky, brose, honey and cream briefly without ice.
  3. Serve in a small glass, traditionally at Hogmanay.
