Feuerzangenbowle

The Feuerzangenbowle is a built cocktail from Central Europe. It is made with red wine and overproof white rum, served in a copper mug.

Strength: about 19% ABV in the glass, roughly 25 g of alcohol per drink (an estimate; brands and dilution vary).

Germany’s fire-tongs punch, made famous by the 1944 film of the same name and still a Christmas market ritual.

Cloves2 pieces

Measures for one serve. Open the drink in Bar Bible to scale it to a batch or switch to ounces.

Method

  1. Warm the wine with the spices and orange slices in a pot, without boiling.
  2. Lay a metal grate or tongs across the pot, put the sugar on it and soak it with overproof rum.
  3. Light it and let the burning sugar drip into the wine, adding rum only with a long ladle, never from the bottle. Serve hot.
